Connecting Students with Sustainable Manufacturing through Industry Partnership with Thrace Ipoma

Climate Engine is proud to highlight a success story that demonstrates how university–industry collaboration can strengthen practical learning, innovation awareness, and student engagement with sustainable manufacturing.

The University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM) launched its Innovation Month within the Climate Engine project by organizing a seminar in partnership with Thrace Ipoma, one of the leading manufacturers of packaging solutions for food and non-food products.

The event brought together 28 participants, including students and academic staff, and provided them with first-hand insight into modern industrial manufacturing, advanced packaging technologies, and sustainable production practices.

Representatives of Thrace Ipoma introduced the company’s production activities, innovative technologies, high-tech manufacturing equipment, and advanced packaging solutions. Particular attention was given to sustainable manufacturing processes, resource efficiency, environmentally friendly production methods, and the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

The seminar created an open dialogue between industry experts, researchers, and students. It demonstrated how innovation, technological development, and sustainability can be successfully integrated into contemporary industrial production.

Climate Engine’s Contribution

Climate Engine provided the framework for strengthening collaboration between higher education and industry through the Innovation Month initiative.

Through the Virtual Laboratory for Climate Change and Technological Innovations, UCTM facilitated direct interaction between students, academic staff, and representatives of Thrace Ipoma. This created opportunities for knowledge exchange, professional networking, and practical learning beyond the traditional classroom environment.

The event supported Climate Engine’s objective of preparing students for future careers by exposing them to real industrial challenges, innovative manufacturing technologies, and sustainable business practices. It also reinforced the role of the Virtual Laboratory as a bridge between academic knowledge and industrial application.

Outcomes and Impact

The seminar generated important educational, professional, and institutional impact.

It engaged 28 participants, including students and academic staff, and strengthened cooperation between UCTM and Thrace Ipoma. The event increased awareness of sustainable manufacturing technologies and environmentally responsible industrial practices, while providing participants with practical knowledge of modern packaging production and advanced manufacturing equipment.

The seminar also encouraged dialogue between academia and industry on future technological developments, sustainability challenges, and the skills required for the green and digital transition. For students, the event enhanced understanding of industrial innovation, sustainable production, and career opportunities within the manufacturing sector.

At the institutional level, the activity increased the visibility of the Climate Engine project and the Virtual Laboratory for Climate Change and Technological Innovations as facilitators of university–industry collaboration. It also promoted knowledge transfer and strengthened the university innovation ecosystem through direct engagement with an industrial partner.

The event successfully demonstrated how cooperation between universities and industry can accelerate innovation, support sustainability, and prepare the next generation of engineers and researchers for future industrial transformation.

Advancing Practical Learning for Sustainable Industry

This success story illustrates Climate Engine’s contribution to connecting students with real industrial environments and sustainability-oriented business practices.

By creating opportunities for direct engagement with Thrace Ipoma, the project helped students and academic staff better understand how sustainable manufacturing is implemented in practice. The seminar also strengthened the relationship between UCTM and industry, supporting the development of a more innovation-oriented and practice-based educational ecosystem.
